The fact that the Peine festival halls in Südstadt exist at all is thanks to a love story: in 1914, the chairman of the supervisory board of Ilseder Hütte, Dr. Wilhelm Meyer, married the actress Anna Glenk. She convinced her husband and brother-in-law that Peine needed a venue for cultural events.
The hut bought the building in 1920 and commissioned the architect Anton van Norden to redesign the building.
On May 13, 1922, the Peine Festival Halls were inaugurated with the play "Joan of Arc".
In 1958, the building was renovated and reopened with 732 seats. Today, the Stadttheater is run by the Kulturring Peine e.V. and the audience is offered a varied program of opera, operetta, musicals, plays and ballet.
