The castle is referred to around 1186 as castro, quod appellatur Haghen (castle called Hagen). Located on the important military and trade route between Minden and Halberstadt, the castle was the ancestral seat of the von Hagen family until around 1280, although little further information has survived. The walls and moats of the castle were used to defend against enemy raids and sieges, which were quite common in this area at the time. The name of the castle goes back to Knight Gebhard von Borgfeld, who took over the castle from the Dukes of Wolfenbüttel in 1280.
A newly built sports hall for tournaments and competitions of all kinds is currently in use on the grounds. Cultural life takes place in the converted stables. Rooms in the old manor house have also been refurbished and are very popular for readings, conferences and wedding ceremonies. Festivals such as the medieval festival in the summer vacations or the Christmas market on the first weekend of Advent have established themselves in the inner courtyard of the castle complex.Good to know
