Situated in the residential area of the same name, Steterburg Abbey was founded in 1001 on the site of Steterburg Castle, which was already in ruins at the time. Commissioned by Duke Karl I (1735 to 1780) after two previous buildings between 1751 and 1758 and built according to designs by the architect and officer Anton Ulrich von Blum, today's baroque church of the former convent is one of the most important sacred buildings in Salzgitter and today serves as the parish church of the Protestant community of Steterburg. It is connected to the abbess's residence built in 1691 to the south of the complex and the convent buildings by a corridor covered with barrel vaults.
