The Paderborn plateau presents itself as a vast, sometimes barren and rugged landscape during a hike on the Dahler Aussichtstour, which is a good 12 kilometers long.

Thanks to its abundance of wind, the Paderborn plateau is characterized by numerous wind turbines. The landscape, which is often wide, often appears rough unless it is broken up by valley incisions and small wooded areas. The farmland, often strewn with light-colored stones, reinforces this impression. But in good weather, you can enjoy wonderful views across the countryside and get to know some of the typical features of this area, which is one of the largest karst landscapes in Germany.

An addition to the Dahler Aussichtstour is the Paderborn Karst Trail, which stretches south of the village. It also offers wonderful views and introduces you to other karst phenomena. These include the winding Ellerbach stream, several sinkholes and the Merschetal valley with its former quarry, where you can clearly see the stratification of the limestone. The Dahl Sculpture Trail is also part of the Paderborn Karst Trail.

Directions

The starting point of the Dahl viewing tour is the parish church of St. Margaretha in the center of Dahl. From there, the trail heads east towards Ellerstraße (K 38). After just a few meters, it branches off in the direction of Turmberg, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Ellerbach valley. You will now steadily gain altitude through beautiful beech forest.

The Braunsohle opposite the Schlipshof is a special sinkhole: a wet doline. Water-impermeable clay has gradually accumulated in the funnel, preventing the water from seeping into the limestone. The path crosses County Road 1 and from Holterfeld, the view sweeps far across the countryside. It becomes clear that the Paderborn plateau is one of the regions with the highest density of wind turbines in inland Germany.

The Pamelsche Grund nature reserve is soon reached. Parts of the area belong to the "Goldgrund / Auf der Lieth" training area. The dry and nutrient-poor slopes are characterized by species-rich calcareous grasslands. Seven orchid species and other special plant species have found their home here. The hedges and shrubs also provide a habitat for numerous birds and insects. From Pamelschen Grund, the trail runs steadily downhill - with many beautiful views - back to Dahl.
