- Destination: Hikers' parking lot Bourauel, Eitorf
Wanted: Ant, woodlouse, bumblebee, hedgehog, owl, dragonfly, butterfly, black stork, dormouse, forest lizard and wildcat. These and many other animals, some of them rare, live in the forest and on the fields and meadows of the Mengbach Valley. With a little luck and attention, you can spot them!
Take pictures: Try to photograph as many animals as possible! It's not difficult at all. Ants and woodlice, for example, can often be found. However, because some animals are very shy, we have helped a little: There are not quite real animals hidden along the edge of the path on some trees. (Tip: look up more often!)
Win: If you have spotted and photographed four of the eleven animals mentioned, send the pictures by e-mail to: fotosafari@naturregion-sieg.de. All correct entries will be entered into our annual competition.
The photo safari has not only gained a new animal object, but also a new photo point in the form of the “Swallowtail” butterfly. With a great panorama, the spot is perfect for your souvenir photo with family, friends, individually or as a couple!

Directions
At the start of the tour, an idyllic country lane takes you along a series of fragrant meadows through the tranquil Mengbach valley. Here, the stream that gives the valley its name bubbles merrily through the small valley, which is kept open by regular mowing. The route leads gently uphill; venerable oaks line the path. In summer, the air is full of birdsong and butterflies provide a splash of color. Soon a majestic-looking forest with a few clearings replaces the tranquil atmosphere of the stream valley. A partly narrow forest path leads you to the “Gecksbitze”. In the forest, you will be surprised by a small green clearing under chestnut trees. On the crest of the hill is a larger clearing with a solitary fruit grove. After a few hundred meters of forest path, there is an extensive sunny hillside meadow where you can take a break. Here, the small Storcker hut with barbecue facilities invites you to enjoy a picnic. From here, the view sweeps far across the meadows down to Eitorf and the wooded heights of Leuscheid. Before you soon reach the starting point again on a quiet asphalt path, one orchard follows the next on the last downhill section. The trees in the meadows bear different varieties of fruit, some of which are old, and are considered biotopes worthy of protection: according to experts, up to 5,000 different plant and animal species live in an orchard meadow.
