The Lower Saxony Trail, X6, is a traditional main hiking trail of the Teutoburg Forest Association and connects one of the most famous German monuments, the "Hermannsdenkmal" in Lippe, with the traditional spa town of Pyrmont in Lower Saxony.
After a short visit to the WALK hiking competence center and the ascent of the Hermann monument with its fantastic views, we start our hike. Passing the bird park in Heiligenkirchen with its exotic birds and small animals, we hike over the Hangstein towards Wiggengrund and climb up to the Große Egge. The European Hiking Cross - where the E1 European Hiking Trail and the R1 European Cycle Route meet - and the Externsteine are further highlights of our hike.
The trail leads us to Horn Castle, built by the noble lord Bernhard V zur Lippe in the 14th century, along the town wall to the "Stinkebrink" moor, part of the history of the Meinberg spa. Through the nature reserve at Norderteich, we reach the Spielberg near Reelkirchen and on to the Nessenberg. We first walk along the Diestel, then continue towards Schieder and north of Lake Schieder to Glashütte, a district of the town of Schieder-Schwalenberg. We climb up to Herlingsburg Castle, a cultural and historical monument
a pre-Roman iron-sided hilltop settlement from the Late Latène period. A tour of the site provides information about the history of the region, and we can enjoy the views over the Lippe region during a break. Along the Eschenbach stream, we reach the town of Lügde, first mentioned in a document in 784 and famous for its Easter wheel race. Through the Emmerauenpark and the historic town center, the path leads us below the Schildberg to Bad Pyrmont, the destination of our hike.
