Highlights along the cycle route
  • Historical town center of Bad Salzuflen and Schötmar
  • Fruit trail in Hoffmanns Wiesen
  • Renaturalization of the Bega River
  • Watching animals and nature along rivers and in nature reserves
  • Poppy fields in bloom in early summer
  • Beet fields in the Lippe growing region

At the historic Rathhaus, one of the few town halls in Germany with two "h "s, there is a bronze plaque embedded in the floor slabs. It was erected to mark the 50th anniversary of the town of Bad Salzuflen.

We cycle out of the pedestrian zone to the new town hall of Bad Salzuflen in Rudolph-Brandes-Allee, the actual start and finish of the cycle tour. Now we follow Lockhauser Straße over the Bega bridge. Before crossing the Werre, we take a sharp right turn.

Fruit trail at Hoffmanns Wiesen

The bikes roll along the interesting fruit trail at Hoffmanns Wiesen on a well-maintained, water-bound path. However, it is worth getting off, as the individual stations along the nature trail provide interesting background information about the fruit trees and vegetation along the way. Shortly before the Bega baths, there are information signs about the renaturation of the Bega.

Water birds also sit on the riverbank or on bushes and spy out prey. In Bad Salzuflen, the two rivers Bega and Salze flow into the Werre. Later, at Bad Oeynhausen-Rehme, the Werre flows into the Weser and heads towards the North Sea.

The circular route of the lying eight runs from Bad Salzuflen railroad station along a well-maintained cycle path towards Herford and accompanies the Werre on the right. On a late summer evening, friends of sunsets sit on the riverbank and enjoy this unique evening atmosphere.

Landscape conservation areas and poppy fields

Between the two villages of Biemsen and Ahmsen lie grassland and farmland as well as the Voßsiek landscape conservation area.

We leave the banks of the Werre and make a loop under the A2 freeway bridge. Continuing along the residential roads, we pass gardens and enter the municipality of Lockhausen. On summer evenings, it smells enticingly of barbecues, you can see people sitting together on balconies and terraces and there is a subtle air of lightness about everything.

Popular photo motifs in early summer are the poppy fields near Lockhausen. In summer, the golden-brown grain fields with chicory and in autumn the sunflowers.

Detour to the Bexter Wald bird trail

Tip: For bird lovers or ornithologists, a detour to the 1.5 km long bird trail in Bexter Wald is well worthwhile. The easy-to-circumnavigate hiking and cycling trail leads through the 49-hectare forest. Information boards provide interesting facts about seldom-seen bird species and the importance of birds.

After this excursion, we cycle to the next station of the lying eight in the west and reach the village of Wülfer-Bexten after a few steps.

Vigorous beet fields near Knetterheide

The beet fields to the right and left of the cycle path show us that this region is a popular area for growing sugar beet and vegetables.

Cycle tour tip: The regional beet route runs south of Bad Salzuflen and shows cyclists even more of the rich cultivation area in Lipperland. Worthwhile!

Near Knetterheide, your gaze is drawn from the bike to golden yellow grain fields, past green, gently undulating landscapes to old tree-lined avenues in the distance.

We cross the Werre again and let the bikes roll to Schötmar.

Popular meeting place for young and old

Before you cycle to the castle, you pass the Werre cemetery of the Protestant Reformed parish of Schötmar and the Catholic church of St. Kilian.

We follow the "Krumme Weide" road over a bridge over the Werre and stop at the church of the Protestant Reformed parish of St. Kilian in Schötmar.

Along urban streets, we meet locals with a drink in their hand and sitting comfortably on the church steps.

The church tower, at around 47 m, is impossible to miss. The church is one of the oldest church buildings in the Lippe region.

At that time, the Lippe region did not belong to North Rhine-Westphalia, but to what is now the federal state of Lower Saxony.

Stately castle with castle park

One of the last highlights of the "Lying Eight in the West" cycle tour is the castle park of Stietencron Castle in Schötmar. The castle used to be the seat and manor house of the Schötmar manor. Today, the castle building houses the Bad Salzuflen music school.

The park is particularly beautiful to photograph in the early morning or late evening hours.

If you like, you can get something hearty or sweet from the surrounding restaurants for a break.

To return to the end of the cycle tour, take Schlossstraße to Rudolf-Brandes-Allee.

A visit to the restaurants in the town center or the Bad Salzuflen adventure graduation works is a great way to round off the day.

Directions

The municipality of Bad Salzuflen celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019.
To mark this anniversary, the ADFC Bad Salzuflen developed a route through the villages entitled: 12 villages, 1 cycle path. In April 2019, the cycle path was inaugurated in the presence of an ADFC cycling group.

This cycle path, in the shape of a horizontal figure of eight, can be divided into two stages. In a western part with a length of 25 km. In the east, a circular route of 27 km.

For the circular routes, we were looking for a cycle route along low-traffic, predominantly asphalted roads.

Each circular route can be ridden clockwise or anti-clockwise or supplemented with additional stops. It is also possible to shorten the routes. Ideal for families with small children or for sprightly pensioners.
