  • Start: Gersdorfer Winkel, town of Elstra
  • Destination: Ostro, municipality of Panschwitz-Kuckau
The route hiking trail leads through the entire town of Elstra to Ostro, a district of the Sorbian municipality Panschwitz-Kuckau.

The starting point for the hike is Gersdorfer Winkel in the Elstra district of Boderitz. From there, the path leads to the Kälberberg (364 m above sea level) with remains of a hillfort and a summit register, to the Boderitzer Schanze, the mammoth garden in Prietitz, the Schanze in Prietitz, which was probably built in the 10th century as a refuge castle by the Milceni who were then settled in the region, and to the town of Elstra, where the Holland pottery, the market and Elstra Castle are worth seeing and visiting. Afterwards, it continues over the quarry in Rauschwitz into the forest area of the Luchsenburg, where the Hochstein (449 m above sea level) and the source of the Schwarze Elster are passed. The route continues over the Leipsberg to the Ostro Schanze.

The hiking trail is consistently marked with a yellow stripe. There is the possibility to take a shortcut from the Rauschwitz quarry to Kindisch. This eliminates the demanding ascents and descents to the Hochstein and the source of the Schwarze Elster.

Directions

The hiking trail starts at "Gersdorfer Winkel" in the district of Boderitz in the town of Elstra. Several hiking trails intersect at Gersdorfer Winkel, e.g. the Upper Lusatian Ring trail as well as the Wohla-Kamenz trail. These provide a direct connection to the town of Kamenz. The Schanzenweg then leads over the legendary Kälberberg, with remains of a hillfort. The trail now runs downhill towards Boderitz and to the Boderitzer Schanze, a defensive and rampart complex in the form of a rectangular earthwork built in the 12th century. The Schanzenweg continues to Prietitz and the namesake Schanze. From Prietitz, it goes to the town of Elstra via the market and the castle. The trail winds through the urban area towards the south, where the forested area of the Luchsenburg can already be seen in the distance. First, however, you pass the granite quarry in Rauschwitz, which offers interesting insights into granite mining. At the quarry, you can choose between a long or short variant of the Schanzenweg. If you choose the longer and equally more difficult route, you hike the Luchsenburg with the Hochstein (449 m above sea level) and the source of the Schwarze Elster. The shorter route leads directly to the district of Kindisch, where the longer route variant also rejoins. It continues to the Leipsberg (313 m above sea level) and then to Ostro in the municipality of Panschwitz-Kuckau. Here is the Ostro Schanze, which was established 2,500 years ago and was long the main place of the Milceni who lived here.
