On the way along the viaduct cycle path, you will learn about Altenbeken's railroad history.

Along the viaduct cycle path, you will become acquainted with historic viaducts - there are two here - tunnels and railway tracks. You will get to know the old Buker railroad station, which lost its former importance to the major transport hub in Altenbeken. And of course, the 044 steam locomotive, which found its place in front of the Egge Museum in 1977 after travelling over one and a half million kilometers, is not to be missed.

The almost 50 km long round trip is quite a challenge, because the Eggegebirge is not only particularly scenic, it also scores with its challenging altitudes. While you reach the lowest point at 185 meters at the Little Viaduct in the Dune, you climb up to 421 meters to the Eggekamm. But don't worry, there are plenty of idyllic places to take a breather along the way.

Directions

Start and finish of the Viadukt cycle path is the Altenbeken station forecourt. It is best to follow the route logo of the Viadukt cycle path in a clockwise direction.

Past the town hall with tourist information office, turn left into Adenauerstraße and after 200 m turn left again into Untere Sage. You pass through two railroad tunnels and after the Sageborn (spring), take a sharp right up the path, which is also the viaduct hiking trail. Pass the Barbarastein high above the portal of the Rehberg tunnel and turn left along the country road to the Rehberghütte. Turn right onto the Eggeweg and follow it to the Knochenhütte. From here, turn right onto Heineweg, past the Max-und-Moritz spring to Driburger Grund with a rustic rest stop.

Continue through the railroad tunnel, left along Hüttenstraße towards Buke and after the St. Andreas monastery, left through the railroad tunnel to the Hossengrund waterworks. From here, continue towards Reelsberg, Am Springe and Holtenbrügge, past the old Buke railroad station to Heinrich-Mertens-Platz - also known as Buker Pilz - where you can take a break. Now take the path also known as the "Crooked Donkey".

You then meet the Jakobspilgerweg and the Klusweg and reach the district of Schwaney. Here you cross the railroad bridge. Keep right, pass the industrial estate and follow the cycle path along Schwaneyer Straße. Then cross the road to the left and turn left again towards Schwaney. Below the Limberg you are now also on the Paderborn country route.

You continue via Rotenbach, Paderbornerstraße and Westtorstraße over the Stadtgraben and Am Saule around the Urenberg. Continue along the Ellerweg, via Paderborner Straße and Salenkruke to reach the Schwaneyer Panoramaweg, which you follow for a short distance. Continue slightly uphill in the direction of Buke, over the bridge, then onto the village road and continue via Keimberg in the direction of Dune, where you will pass the Zum Dunetal inn.

From here, continue through the beautiful Dune valley to the small viaduct. At Dunehof, cross the country road, keep left and turn right after 50 m. Then turn right again towards Altenbeken, past the Waldhaus Durbeke and the Fischerhütte until you reach the Great Viaduct at the entrance to Altenbeken. You should definitely take a photo at Vista Point at the foot of the mighty railroad bridge. Continue along Adenauerstraße towards the town center.

Tip: At the Winterbergstraße junction, be sure to leave the route briefly to the right and marvel at the old 044 monument locomotive after about 50 metres. Opposite you will find the Museumsstuben with delicious homemade cakes or a hearty snack.

Follow Adenauerstraße past the Mertens bed & bike business with café to the market square and then turn left into Bahnhofstraße.

Congratulations: you have reached your destination.
