A cycle tour along the Werse from its source to where it flows into the Ems.

The WerseRadweg invites cycling fans to explore 125 kilometres of flora and fauna along the southern Münsterland. From its source in Beckum, the cycle path leads along the Werse to Münster, where the river flows into the Ems.

Along the way, numerous information boards and five viewing towers in Oelde-Stromberg, Beckum-Vellern, Beckum, Ahlen and Sendenhorst-Albersloh offer the opportunity for a picnic break.

Directions

The river Werse rises in the town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück. The town is famous for the magnificent Rheda Castle and its historic old town with half-timbered houses, picturesque alleys and beautiful squares. This is where the 105-kilometre cycle tour along the Werse begins.

The first destination is the town of Oelde. On the way there, the route leads along fragrant fields and the Stromberg castle ruins in an idyllic landscape.

Once in Oelde, it is worth stopping at the Vierjahreszeiten Park. It was part of the North Rhine-Westphalian State Garden Show in 2001 and is still a centre of attraction for families and numerous events.

The route continues to the beautiful district of Vellern in the town of Beckum. From the lookout tower you can enjoy the view of the gently rolling Münsterland park landscape. Here you can only guess that the local recreation area has been marked by quarries since the Middle Ages. Around Beckum you can also visit the renaturalised Werseaue and the Phoenixpark.

Further on in the direction of Ahlen, cyclists on the Werse cycle path learn interesting facts about the origins of the Saxon noble court of Charlemagne. A visit to the Westfalen colliery in Ahlen, where coal was mined in the past, is an option. A visit to the town can be rounded off with a stroll through the historic old town.

A few kilometres further on, Drensteinfurt awaits cyclists. The name already suggests that there was a ford through the Werse here many years ago. The question of the town's connection with Bengal fire is explained on the cycle tour.

In Sendenhorst, the importance of the Werse in the settlement of the Sendenhorst-Albersloh district can still be seen today. It was instrumental in deciding settlement boundaries and the fertile loam and sandy soils are also due to the Werse.

Arriving in Münster's east, the Werse shows itself from its most beautiful side. The cycle path leads along the Pleister Mill, which provides an opportunity for further refreshment and also offers canoe hire for action fans. Before the Werse flows into the Ems in the Gelmer district, it is worth taking a detour to Münster's old town with its numerous sights.

The Werse flows into the Ems in Münster. At this point, cycling enthusiasts have the opportunity to extend the tour along the Werse.

The two tours in combination form a 188-kilometre-long circular route and lead along the two rivers from Münster, via Warendorf to Rheda-Wiedenbrück, on to Dolberg and back to Münster.
