Die aktuelle Entwicklung im Iran und die Herausforderungen für die Menschenrechtsarbeit

"The current development in Iran and the challenges for human rights work" is the topic of a panel discussion that will take place on Monday, 18 May at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the University of Osnabrück Palace.  

Panel guests are the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid, Prof. Lars Castellucci, Mariam Claren from the human rights organization Háwar Help and Diba Mirzaei from the GIGA Institute of Middle Eastern Studies in Hamburg. The event will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schneckener, University of Osnabrück. Mayor Katharina Pötter will welcome the guests. 

The evening will focus on the current situation of the Iranian civilian population and possible political options for action by Germany and the European Union to improve the human rights situation. How can civil society and the opposition in Iran currently be effectively supported? And what role can the Iranian diaspora in Germany and Europe play in this?

For years, the mullah regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has stood for the suppression of all opposition and massive violations of human rights. This was also the reason for the City of Peace Osnabrück to sponsor the imprisoned Iranian writer and human rights activist Golrokh Iraee, who campaigns against the death penalty, among other things, at the end of 2024.

There are currently fears that internal repression, mass arrests, executions and torture are increasing massively in the shadow of the conflict between the USA, Israel and Iran.

The event is organized by the City of Osnabrück, the German Foundation for Peace Research, the human rights organization Hawar.help and the Center for the Study of Conflict & Peace (CeCoP) at the University of Osnabrück.

Admission is free. Registration is not required, but there is only limited seating available in the auditorium.
