Picture books that stand the test of time: Tiles tell stories. That's right! Too often they "only" hang decoratively on the wall. High time (and the best occasion) to put fine, hand-painted tiles at the centre of an exhibition in our island museum on Juist.
The island museum shows a selection of historical wall tiles, as they were used countless times on Juist and in the rest of northern Germany over the past centuries. The tiles were often found next to fireplaces, protecting the walls from soot and dirt. But they were also popular wall decorations. Sure, they are really beautiful: the fine lines, the strong blue colour, the picturesque motifs ...
But even more: each tile is unique. Each tile has been painted and decorated by hand. Each tile tells a story. Like a picture book hanging on the wall.
