The Bülowviertel in Leipzig Volkmarsdorf is the best example of what can happen when the inhabitants of a city take the design of their district into their own hands. For a long time the Grunderzeit buildings were threatened by decay. In 2009, the Bülowviertel e.V., a neighbourhood association, was founded. It works together with local residents to make the district worth living in and to save the old building structures. The project is successful thanks to unusual approaches such as cooperative models, studios or project houses. The Bülowviertel is particularly popular with young families and students, which is why it is one of Leipzig's youngest districts. The sense of community and the creative ideas help create the special charm of this area in the east of Leipzig. This is celebrated among other things at the annual BülowSTRASSENMUSIKfestival.
