The village of Hambergen and the villages of Wallhöfen, Vollersode, Heißenbüttel and the single farms of Giehlermühlen and Bullwinkel, which later became part of the parish, initially belonged to Scharmbeck for ecclesiastical purposes, but due to the long distances, the farmers of the above-mentioned villages decided in 1335 to build a small church from their own resources. A contract dated December 13, 1335, confirmed by Bishop Borchard of Bremen and Provost Otto between the parish priest in Scharmbeck and the farming communities of the above-mentioned villages and the farms Giehlermühlen and Bullwinkel, documents the permission to hold church services in Hambergen. The chapel is dedicated to the doctors Cosmas and Damian, twin brothers who died as martyrs during the persecution of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. On June 10, 1753, the new church building, which still stands today, was consecrated. Major renovation work was carried out inside the church in 1964 and 1998.
