"Are you all here?" Whenever this line is heard, children know that things are about to get turbulent. Kasper, Seppel and the constable will once again rescue Grandma, Gretel and the princess from the nasty but fortunately often amateurish machinations of robbers, devils and crocodiles. The young audience can join in the excitement and provide loud support. Punch and Judy belongs to childhood like cookies at Christmas time. What many people don't know: The home of the popular puppet character with his daring flock is in Saxon Switzerland!
About 90 years ago, the passionate hand puppeteer Max Jacob founded a puppet theater in the castle town of Hohnstein - and Punch became its biggest star. The Max Jacob Theater still exists today. It not only hosts classic hand puppet shows, but also cabaret, adult theater, cabaret evenings, concerts, lectures and readings.
Not only the theater and the castle, but also life-size Punch puppets and a show workshop for puppet carving can be discovered in Hohnstein. We recommend a walk through the enchanting little castle town on the Punch and Judy trail. Popular hiking destinations in the area include the Brand with its fantastic views, the romantic Polenztal valley and the Gautschgrotte grotto, where a huge ice column forms in some winters!
