Marktkirche

Church
The Marktkirche is the oldest Protestant place of worship in Essen's city centre.
It was the first church of Essen's burghers and the starting point of the Reformation in 1563. It was built in the 11th century at the gates of Essen's Stiftsfreiheit. In 2006, the Marktkirche was redesigned by architect Eckhard Gerber and a new west choir made of blue glass was added. Since September 2006, the Protestant Church has maintained a church re-entry centre in the Marktkirche, which is open every Wednesday.
