The moor rests in magical darkness...shrouded in mist...still in time...It is eight thousand years old and yet it is always attractive: the Pietzmoor attracts visitors with its bizarre landscape and mysterious atmosphere.

The formation of the Pietzmoor
The Pietzmoor is located on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve and still covers an area of approx. 2.5 km2. The formation of the raised bog was favored by the hollow location and impermeable clay layers in the subsoil. Profile investigations carried out in 1975 showed that the maximum peat thickness was 7.50 meters. Assuming an annual growth of the peat-forming sphagnum (peat moss) of around 1 millimeter, the Pietzmoor is almost 8,000 years old. The Pietzmoor has undergone a rather atypical development. Unlike most other bogs, it did not emerge from a nutrient-rich lake, which turned into a fen and developed into a raised bog over time. Instead, cotton grass, sedge and peat moss species settled here very early on after the Ice Age in a water-rich hollow and continued to overgrow it. This development of the raised bog is characteristic of many heather bogs, with the acidic, siliceous subsoil probably playing a decisive role. Centuries of use almost meant the end for this gem. Thanks to successful renaturation, the Pietzmoor can now grow again and is preserved as a "history book of nature".
