Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner (1783 to 1841), born in Neuhaus close to Paderborn, learned the pharmacy trade in Paderborn, before entering in service of the Town Pharmacy as an apprentice in 1805. Here, he experimented with the well-known drug opium and isolated a substance that he called the “sleep-bringing principle” (morphine). He had discovered the first alkaloid that was ever found.
In times of Napoleon, 1809 to 1817, Sertürner ran his own pharmacy in Einbeck before buying the Town Pharmacy in Hamelin in 1822.
He is buried in St. Bartholomew’s chapel outside Einbeck’s city gates where today a stone in his memory may be found.
