The Altenau hiking trail is a tour for anyone who appreciates a particularly long hike. Shady natural forest paths alternate with well-surfaced paths along the banks of the Altenau and the Husen reservoir for 69 km. Expansive views of the beautiful landscape with its idyllic villages are a reward for the short climbs.
Hiking along the Altenau hiking trail is also an encounter with history, architecture, venerable churches and half-timbered romanticism. A detour to the imposing Dalheim monastery complex, which today houses the LWL State Museum of Monastery Culture, is well worthwhile.
Hiker-friendly restaurants and cafés, such as the historic Mallinckrofthof, provide refreshments and fuel you for the next few kilometers of hiking.
