Stade. Land. River. The Hanseatic city of Stade, with over 1000 years of history, is surrounded by unique natural and cultural landscapes and the Elbe and Schwinge rivers. And so the short Stade circuit is a successful combination of city impressions around the old town at the start and finish and, on the other hand, many swings into the green landscape oases in the south and west of Stade around the Schwinge valley.
On your own, you go on a 22-kilometre journey of discovery on two wheels far away from major roads, only a shallow 80 meters in altitude are overcome. The varied tour allows you to experience natural highlights such as the Horstsee lake, the green areas of the semi-open Ottenbeck forest and pasture landscape, the Schwingetal canoeing area with Schwedenschanze, the island, the ramparts and the Stade harbors. The route passes through the districts of Kopenkamp, Klein Thun, Ottenbeck and Riensförde and also touches the Barger Heide nature reserve and the Schwarze Berg.
Along the way, you can be enchanted by all kinds of animal surprises and natural experiences. In Ottenbeck, sturdy Galloway cattle graze on the semi-open forest and pasture landscape. A little further on, the Barger Heath glows an intense purple in July and August. When this natural spectacle is not on display, the heather sheep can be seen doing their favorite thing, grazing the bushes. And the attraction of the Schwinge is always noticeable along the course of the tour: from mid-May to mid-October, cyclists are always in good company with paddling water sports enthusiasts on the course of the river. The birdlife of the natural area will delight cyclists with its melody.
There is a lot to discover on the tour. If you keep an open mind, you can discover remnants from the fortress era at the castle moat and ramparts right at the beginning and end of the route, in Klein Thun historical street names along the route provide insights into Stade's past and in the Barger Heide and on the Schwarzer Berg there are still relics from the Ice Age to be admired in the local landscape. An entertaining tour of city impressions, green oases, natural highlights and various gems along the route off the beaten track.

The short Stade loop starts at the tourist information office at the harbour in Stade and first leads a few meters along the historic Schwedenspeicher before turning right towards Freiburger Straße. After crossing the street Kehdinger Müren, the start of the small Stade loop is at the flood cannons at the tourist information office at the harbor. From there, you walk along the Schwedenspeicher and then turn right to Freiburger Straße. Parkstraße leads to the entrance to the ramparts. The route circles the old town along the water and passes the Stadeum cultural and conference center. At Helmut-Ernst-Miericke-Weg, turn left over the bridge onto Georg-Bastion and continue along the moat through the parks on Erleninsel. There is a large adventure playground for children.
The Synold-Klein-Weg leads out of the city center and under the railroad embankment before continuing through the residential area on Töpferstraße to Horstsee. After Horstsee, the route turns left and from there continues through the park along the course of the stream until it crosses Thuner Straße. The route circles Sanders Anlagen, crosses the B73 and then turns right onto Linzer Straße to Dubbenweg, where it turns left. Follow Dubbenweg along Marienstraße until you reach Harsefelder Landstraße. Turn left through Bronzeschmiede, Lupinenkamp and Klarer Streck to reach the railroad line again just before the Stade-Süd waste management center. On Ottenbecker Damm, you pass the grounds of Vfl Stade until you reach the traffic circle and from there continue along Heidbecker Damm through the Ottenbeck district. Cycle straight on to the Stade airfield in Ottenbeck and through the Heidbeck lowlands to Riensförde. After leaving the residential area at Soltauer Straße, you reach the idyllic area of Barger Heide.
The route leads through the district and the street of the same name, Groß Thun, into the Schwinge valley. On the pretty bridge on Fred-Watzlawik-Weg, you cross the course of the Schwinge, which meanders through Stade to the Elbe. Paddle trails here offer a great experience for SUPers and canoeists. On the Loger Weide, you quickly reach the outskirts of Wiepenkathen and then shortly afterwards the B74 on the Hermann-Vollmers-Weg, which you follow to the B73 junction. After crossing the junction, the tour runs around the Schwarzer Berg along the residential area of Heisterbusch.
At Dietrich-Speckmann-Weg, the route crosses the railroad line again and then follows it along the railroad embankment to Wiesenstraße, where you reach the Stade moat at the museum island shortly afterwards. This brings you back to the center of Stade. Turn right along the moat through the Bürgerpark and over the historic Güldenstern bastion. Before reaching the starting point at the tourist information office, you now only have to pass the Stade town harbor.
