The tour starts at the Cultura - Sparkassentheater and first leads into the historic town center of Rietberg. Numerous pretty half-timbered houses shine along the narrow streets.
The Heimathaus with its richly carved gable front dating back to 1645 (Klosterstraße 3) and the historic town hall (Rathausstraße), which is one of the most beautiful in Westphalia, are particularly worth mentioning. The nearby monastery garden is adorned with sculptures by Rietberg-based artist Wilfried Koch.
Now the route takes you along the River Ems and a stretch along the "Rietberger Fischteiche" nature reserve, an area consisting of smaller and larger ponds. Make a stop at the viewing platform and let your gaze wander over the 26 fish ponds in total.
On the way, you will pass the extremely original and magnificent St. John's Chapel in Rietberg. Completed in 1748, the chapel is a hardly comparable Westphalian sacred building from this era.
Numerous storks have once again settled in the adjacent second-largest wetland conservation area in the district of Gütersloh. The "Rietberger Emsniederung" nature reserve, which is important throughout Europe, is home to many rare bird and plant species.
