Directions
In Rheinbach, you have the chance to see restored parts of a Roman aqueduct that transported drinking water from the Eifel to Cologne. Through the town park, following the Gräbbach stream, you leave the historic village, passing the Eifelfuß nature reserve, which provides habitat for rare animal and plant species. Afterwards, a pilgrimage trail leads you through the Rheinbach forest: a beautiful singletrail along a stream with small pools. At a chapel built in the middle of the forest, you change direction and follow a path toward Tomberg. The castle ruins offer a place to rest, with views over open land to the Siebengebirge. Long straight stretches through picture-book forest follow; back in open country, you discover the village of Hilberath with a barn café. Time to slow down: On lonely field paths, you reach another forest area. The paths stretch to the horizon and offer plenty of opportunities for deep conversations or free thoughts. After another passage on a comfortable forest track through the Blitzenhardt, you reach Berscheid, a cultural landscape sloping toward the Rhine with panoramic views for miles over the Kottenforst to the Bergisches Land. In the hamlet of Scherbach, you will find a rain-protected rest area if needed. Back in the Rheinbach forest, a familiar sight appears: winding singletrails with wooden bridges over a lively forest stream. Before reaching Rheinbach, you discover a steel piece of state history – in the last months of World War II, Allied combat units bombed a munitions depot of the German Wehrmacht hidden in the Rheinbach city forest. On a pedestal beside the path stands the steel casing of a 500-kg bomb. Anyone who gets hungry during the extended route will find dining opportunities in Rheinbach.
