A scenic and historically very attractive route leads hikers from Hirschfeld, the probable birthplace of Katharina von Bora, past the ruins of the Cistercian monastery of Altzella, through meadows and small sections of forest and along the banks of the Freiberger Mulde to Döbeln. Founded in 1162 by Margrave Otto the Rich, the monastery in the valley of the river was also the burial place of the Wettin dynasty for almost 200 years. It is highly likely that Luther's wife was born and baptized in Hirschfeld.

Almost the entire route runs along the banks of the Freiberger Mulde, offering hikers wonderful views of the landscape and quiet places for reflection. The romantic park of the former Altzella monastery, which also owned the town of Roßwein, is also located on the Freiberger Mulde. The Reformation reached the area around 1540. The church in Hirschfeld with Luther's lodge and parts of the building from the 13th century is also worth a visit.

Directions

This hike starts at the church in Hirschfeld, which was first mentioned in 1214. You leave the village, which is a district of Reinsberg and belongs to the Altzella monastery district, via the Mühlweg and soon come across the Freiberger Mulde, which you cross a little later. After passing under the A4 highway, the trail continues along Eichholzgasse to Nossen, from where you follow the Mulde Valley hiking trail past the ruins of the Altzella monastery to the river crossing at Burgmühle. Here, the Luther Trail Saxony separates from the Mulde Valley Hiking Trail to take a detour to the church in Gleisberg. Both paths meet again in Wolfstal and continue together through wooded areas and the village of Gersdorf to the entrance to Roßwein. After crossing the railroad tracks and the river, you are led directly into the town center, where you return to the Mulde via the market. After switching from the left to the right bank, the route continues parallel to the watercourse and, after crossing the Striegis river, reaches the village of Niederstriegis. After crossing the Freiberger Mulde from Mahlitzsch, the route follows the Muldental hiking trail northwards. It ends in Döbeln in Klosterstraße.
