This route leads along the path of the Schildbürger through woodland and heathland, past historic burial mounds and a manor house to the over 1000-year-old cathedral city of Wurzen with its historic old town.

In Schildau, you can follow in the footsteps of the legendary Schildbürger. Here you will find the Schildbürger Museum, a Schildbürger playground and fountain, as well as the Gneisenau Museum, which is well worth a visit, as the famous von Gneisenau came from here. From Schildau, the trail leads hikers through the beautiful Dahlen Heath towards Wurzen. Along the way, between the villages of Frauwalde and Heyda, there are historic burial mounds that are still visible today. In Dornreichenbach, hikers can recharge their batteries with a delicious ice cream. Once in Wurzen, the historic old town, a visit to the cathedral and a historically interesting town museum await. The bishops of Meissen resided here in the 16th century, as evidenced by the well-preserved bishop's castle. In 1542, Luther tried to settle the "Wurzen feud" and thus helped to prevent a war.

Directions

You start in Belgern-Schildau at the corner of Bahnhofstraße and Marktstraße, from where the trail heads south along Wurzener Straße. At Heinrich-Heine-Straße, the trail turns left and leads to Sitzenroda. From there, the route heads south along the Sitzenroda stream and then along forest paths towards Schmannewitz. There, the route turns right just after entering the village, shortly after reaching Torgauer Straße. The route continues past the bridge pond in the direction of Frauwalde. You cross the village via the streets "Am Hang" and "Mittelweg" along the marked route and reach the Dammmühlteich pond. The trail continues along the Lossabach stream towards Heyda. There the hiking trail meets the ecumenical pilgrimage route coming from the east. From there, you reach Dornreichenbach, Körlitz and continue towards Wurzen. Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The over 1000-year-old town of Wurzen is the birthplace of the painter and poet Joachim Ringelnatz. A visit to the house where he was born and the museum where the Ringelnatz collection is kept should therefore not be missed. Guided tours of the town, the cathedral, the museum and the castle can be booked.
