The route from the town of Torgau runs along the Elbe floodplains with an impressive panorama over the town and then on hiking and forest trails through the Torgau Ratsforst forest along small lakes to Schildau.

The route starts in one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany, which is one of the places where the Reformation originated. This was the political center of the Reformation in the 16th century. After a visit to Hartenfels Castle and the town church of St. Mary's, where the remains of Katharina Luther lie (she died in Torgau in 1552), the hiker sets off on the trail through the Elbe meadows, where a fantastic panoramic view of the town of Torgau awaits them once again. The trail leads along small lakes and along beautiful hiking and forest trails, along village roads with little traffic. After passing Schildau church, the path leads to the neighboring village of Sitzenroda, a passage that Luther liked to use, as it is off the main path. Luther was in great danger in the ducal territory and therefore used paths away from the village center. In Schildau, hikers can visit the Gneisenauge memorial, the Schildbürgermuseum and the Schildbürgerbrunnen fountain as well as a viewing tower on the Schildberg.

Directions

In Torgau, you start at Hartenfels Castle. From there, you follow the marked route along the Elbe, past the harbor castle, heading south to the village of Loßwig. There you turn right to the village of Pflückuff, which you leave again heading west on the Sachsenweg. At the fork in the path, continue along the Schwertweg through the Torgauer Ratsforst forest. Hiking and forest trails along small lakes take you through the village of Staupitz to Schildau. The last stage between Kurzwalde and Schildau is on a village road with little traffic. However, as cars are allowed to drive at 80 km/h there, it is best to run alongside the left-hand edge of the road so that you can be seen by approaching cars as early as possible.
