The beech forest area "Dahrener Berg" is the largest contiguous of its kind in Upper Lusatia, hosting a variety of plants and animals. The forests of the Dahrener Berg consist mostly of pure beech stands. Mixed tree species found include sessile oak, common birch, spruce, larch, and the rare silver fir, whose occurrence is among the most significant in the Lusatian Highlands. As a result of thinning carried out in the 1990s, European beech has been able to settle in some stands of Dahrener Berg. Shrubs such as hazel and elderberry are also present in the beech forests. The ground flora consists of undemanding species like hair grass, blueberry, wood sorrel, and wood millet.
If you are lucky, during a hike through the largest beech forest area in Upper Lusatia, you can observe rare birds such as the Eurasian pygmy owl or the black woodpecker. These species can most frequently be discovered in older European beech stands.
