Schneifel Moor Trail

On winding paths, the hiking trail leads you deep into the highest forest of the North Eifel Nature Park. It comes across as enchanted and mystical. Soft green moss carpets drape the forest floor, interspersed with blueberry and cranberry bushes. Isolated rays of sunlight penetrate the dense branches, drawing patterns in yellow-orange tones on the bark of the trees. In a surprising number of places you will discover overgrown bunker ruins that peel out of the semi-darkness of the forest when you look closely. These are relics of the Westwall, built in dark times when the Schneifel Ridge was still bare.

A wonderfully eerie moorland feeling

The circular trail begins at the hiking and winter sports parking lot at the log cabin "Schwarzer Mann", first leads through the forests of the Schneifel and finally on the northwestern side of the Schneifel Ridge through the Eschvenn. But even if Holla doesn't show up, the Schneifel moorland trail is not stingy with charms. In the midst of these wetland and marsh forests, it leads to the headwaters of the Alfbach, which is fed by dozens of rivulets, bogs and ponds. To protect the endangered flora and fauna, boardwalks carry you over particularly sensitive areas where you can discover rare plants such as the bell heath or the forest lousewort.
About halfway along the trail, the forest scenery opens up to the magnificent "Dreiländerblick". A wooden platform invites you to relax or - if you like - to have a romantic picnic. If the view is good, you can see as far as the mountain ranges of Islek, Ösling and the High Fens.  On the way back you will dive into the shady forest again - maybe a fairy will show up after all.
