Stage 1 of the Sigwardsweg starts at the "Kanzlers Weide" parking lot directly on the Weser and ends at the Porta Kanzel after a number of historical sights.

The hike starts in Minden at the pedestrian bridge at the "Kanzlers Weide" parking lot. Worth seeing are the 1200-year-old cathedral with cathedral treasury, St. Mary's Church, St. Martini's Church, St. Simeon's Church and St. Peter's Church. From Minden, the route heads south along the Weser, with the Kaiser Wilhelm monument in view, to Barkhausen. After Barkhausen, the ascent into the Wiehengebirge begins. On the Wittekindsberg you come to Margarethenklus, a chapel that probably belonged to a Benedictine convent founded by Bishop Milo in 992. Nearby are the foundations of a cruciform church from the 9th/10th century. A steep descent begins at the Kaiser Wilhelm monument, after which the path crosses the Weser. After 3 km, the first stage destination is Hausberge. The path leads past the parish church of St. Walburga up into the Weser mountains to the Porta Kanzel, the former site of a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony, with magnificent views of the Weser and the Wiehengebirge mountains.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The restaurant directly at the Schiffmühle with a view of the Weser is a great place to stop for a bite to eat.

The view from the Kaiser Wilhelm monument is unique and extends over the entire Porta Kanzel.
