  • Start: Spreeradweg in Bautzen, where Lindenberg and Fischergasse meet
  • Destination: Bautzen at the train station or in a rustic old town inn
On this somewhat more demanding route of about 40 km, the Spreeradweg connects with the railway bike path into the Cunewalder Valley. Wooded and hilly, it goes over the Czorneboh with magnificent panoramic views back to Bautzen.

From Bautzen, initially use the scenically attractive Spreeradweg to Eulowitz, passing rock valleys, mills, and catering options.

A detour to Doberschau to the prehistoric rampart, the "Doberschauer Schanze," is worthwhile, and the Bohemian Bridge on the old trade route Bautzen-Prague is also worth a photo. Further upstream of the Spree follow Großpostwitz and Eulowitz, where you use the bike path on the B 96 for a bit before turning to the former now paved railway line to Cunewalde. The almost 15 km long village is well experienced on the railway bike path, and a stop in the half-timbered house park, which is right next to Germany's largest village church, is worthwhile. In the district Klipphausen begins the ascent to the Czorneboh (Sorbically misinterpreted as "Black God").

After strengthening at the mountain inn and climbing the mountain observation tower from 1850, it goes north down toward Bautzen via Wuischke, Rachlau, and Mehltheuer. Here in May 1813, a significant part of the Napoleon battle at Bautzen took place. More about it can be seen at the Bautzen Museum.

Directions

The route starts at Bautzen's Spree, leads over Bleichestraße and through the railway viaduct to the south. Passing Bautzen Spreebad, it goes through the beautiful Humboldthain to Grubschütz (inn Spreetal). The well-signposted Spreeradweg continues to Doberschau, Singwitz, and Obergurig to Großpostwitz. There you use the bike path along the B96 for a while, could head back toward the Spree in Eulowitz (inn Erbgericht), but remain on the roadside path until Neueulowitz and Halbendorf/Gebirge. In Halbendorf, the comfortably paved railway bike path starts on the left, on which we stay until the Cunwalde church level. After stopping and sightseeing, follow Kirchweg, always leaning slightly left into the district Klipphausen, to reach Streitbuschweg toward the forest edge. The paved path climbs quite steeply, leading to the saddle between Czorneboh and Steinberg. Turn left to go up the road to the mountain inn, then return to this path to take the gravel descent to Wuischke. Some riding skills and caution are advisable here. One should climb the oldest stone mountain observation tower in Upper Lusatia and also visit the so-called Devil’s Table at the parking lot. In ancient times, the winter and summer solstice were observed there, perhaps it was also a cult site. There are several archaeo-astronomical sites in Upper Lusatia that are older than the famous Stonehenge (research project Götterhand).

Then turn left in Wuischke heading toward Bautzen. The way leads onto the narrow road coming from Meschwitz. We keep west (left) to reach Rachlau, Döhlen, Pielitz, and Mehltheuer (near Rote Schänke in Pielitz, reachable left over the road to Cunewalde).

From Mehltheuer, it rolls almost by itself back to Bautzen. To enjoy panoramic views, you should definitely dismount! We go straight in Jeßnitz, then half-right toward Rabitz, turn left after crossing the railway bridge onto Findlingsweg to the nature park, where Bautzen’s observatory is also located. Then it goes back to our starting point in Bautzen.
