With a few exceptions, the Wittekindsroute runs exclusively through the district of Herford and describes a large arc through the entire district, always following the district boundary. Over a route length of 143 km, the route runs through Herford, Bad Salzuflen, Vlotho, Löhne, Kirchlengern, Bünde, Rödinghausen, Spenge and Enger. In Bad Salzuflen, Vlotho, Rödinghausen and Spenge, the route passes through the town centers, providing opportunities for further activities.

Under the spell of history

The Wittekindsroute takes you on an exciting tour through the entire district of Herford. Experience the history and stories of Wittekindsland. Who was Widukind and why did he become a legend? How did the typical half-timbered cottages of the region come about and how did the Wiskenmakers shape the landscape? What do the old boundary stones tell us and why was the small train service in the district of Herford discontinued? You will find answers to these questions on the 143 km long circular tour through the Wittekindskreis. Interesting stories about the development of the region are told at a total of 24 stops.

And along the way, the route takes you to numerous leisure destinations, such as the Hücker Moor, the Aqua Magica or the graduation towers in Bad Salzuflen. Culinary delights are also not neglected on a cycle tour along the Wittekindsroute. Whether a farm café, beer garden or ice cream parlor - there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments along the route.

Experience the gently rolling Ravensberg hills and the view of the Wiehengebirge mountains, overcome climbs and descents in the foothills of the Lippe mountains and cycle through the river valleys of the Werre and Else. Towns such as Bad Salzuflen, Spenge, Vlotho and Rödinghausen offer variety and invite you to stroll and explore.
