River cycling to historic brick production sites
The brick route takes cyclists on an interesting environmental experience at the Heerser Mühle mill, to relaxed picnic spots at the lakes near the Werre and invites you to experience everything to do with brick production up close.
Cyclists and children experience the Werre and Bega rivers on this low-gradient cycle tour. You can gaze up in wonder at the treetops on the plane tree avenue near Grastrup-Hölsen.
Pack refreshments and snacks for the road in your saddlebags and get on the pedals for the brick route!
Welcome to the Heerser Mühle environmental center
We start with our bikes at the Salzhof in the idyllic town centre of Bad Salzuflen. Along the Werre, we quickly reach the interesting and friendly environmental center at Heerser Mühle. For children and adults, the extensive mill grounds are a great place to learn about the wonders of nature.
A large sundial welcomes families and children with the inscription, "Time for children, time at the environmental center".
The association "Umweltzentrum Heerser Mühle e. V." is the sponsor of the environmental center and a non-profit, recognized provider of independent youth welfare services. The environmental center has been committed to nature conservation and environmental education for many years.
In the enchanted, naturally grown niches, it is worth pausing to listen to the rippling of the Werre or to experience the refreshing river with your feet.
Bee lovers will open their hearts at the sight of the numerous bee hotels. Perhaps one or two of you might like to count all the bee hotels, there are certainly quite a few!
After the excursion at the Heerser Mühle environmental center and a leisurely break in the mill café, we pedal again and accompany the Werre and the Bega. The Lippe river Bega flows into the Werre near Bad Salzuflen. This flows into the Weser at Bad Oeynhausen-Rehme. The Weser's journey continues to Bremerhaven where it flows into the North Sea.
Experience nature around Bad Salzuflen
The cycle path of the Brick Route meanders between the two rivers to Lake Hartigsee and Lake Krietfeldsee.
On the lake shores, you will find resting places to take a break and observe water birds. The view through the binoculars gives us a close-up experience of nature, which never stands still.
Not far from the lakes is the well-known LWL Museum Ziegelei Lage.
Discover the brickworks Lage for young and old
The brickworks in Lage is an industrial museum and adventure site for adults and families with children.
In addition to the well-known brine production in Bad Salzuflen, brick production was a fundamental part of people's lives. It was an important workplace for the local people. And without bricks, there would be no roof over their heads.
Take a look inside the Beermann family villa, climb into the kiln, look around the vegetable garden and take the opportunity to make a brick yourself.
After this exciting journey into brick production, the wonderful sun terrace beckons you to enjoy a delicious ice cream or fine coffee and cake.
Unique avenue of plane trees
Following the orange signposts, we drive through the rural region and after a few kilometers reach another scenic highlight between Grastrup-Hölsen and Retzen. Before you reach the Ostwestfalenstraße road, you will come to an avenue of plane trees near the Gut Hündersen landscape garden. This garden can mainly only be glimpsed behind the walls, but if you ride under the gnarled and majestic plane trees, you will feel like a cycling queen or king.
Regional cycle paths of Bad Salzuflen
On low-traffic cycle paths and roads, we ride the last few kilometers through the districts of the large municipality of Bad Salzuflen and reach our destination, the Salzhof in the historic town center of Bad Salzuflen.
At the end of the brick route, we review the cycle tour over a culinary break or coffee and cake and get inspiration for our next cycling or hiking tour around the salt town of Bad Salzuflen.
