Crown of Saxon Switzerland

"This handsome village ... stretches up a very high mountain, the Wachberg, from which you have one of the most beautiful views," wrote Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger in 1812 in the first travel guide to Saxon Switzerland. Barely 30 years later, the first inn was built here. It still exists more than 170 years later! The Wachbergbaude is one of the most traditional mountain inns in the region - and one of the cosiest.

The fire crackles dully in the fireplace, the "Gipfelglüher", a wonderfully berry mulled wine made to a secret house recipe, warms you to your toes and the aroma of hearty Wachberg aspic with roast potatoes and homemade remoulade wafts from the plate. This is what a hiking break at the Wachbergbaude, which is open from Friday to Sunday in winter, could feel like.

The location of the mountain inn on the north-eastern edge of the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, just before the Bohemian border, makes it an insider tip. This is also the region. Anyone hiking from Sebnitz over the open hills through Hertigswalde, Ottendorf, Saupsdorf and Hinterhermsdorf will find authentic village life, a varied mix of fields and forests - and silence in winter.

For guests who want to enjoy a break close to nature here, away from the usual tourist trails, there are various accommodation options to choose from at the Wachbergbaude: from comfortable family rooms to rustic hiking accommodation. A winter event highlight is the "Mountain New Year's Eve" with a three-course menu, music, dancing and fireworks!
