Since the 13th century, when the people of Bonn included the cathedral basilica in their city seal, it has been the landmark of the city of Bonn.
The cathedral was built over the martyrs' graves of the city's patron saints Cassius and Florentius. The feast of the city's patron saints Cassius and Florentius is celebrated every year with a high mass, which also includes the traditional candle sacrifice by the council, which has been documented since the Middle Ages. A record of the Cassius monastery from 1595 speaks of six wax candles donated to the city by the magistrate.

Since September 2014, it was clear that Bonn Minster was in need of another complete overhaul 40 years after its general renovation. After extensive preparatory work, the church was closed in 2016 and services and pastoral care were provided from St. Remigius.
On Sunday, October 31, 2021, the church was liturgically opened with a festive high mass.
