The church is located on the Schreiberberg above the town center. The first construction work dates back to around 1450. After a fire and various alterations, a larger new building was constructed between 1704 and 1724 under the direction of George Bähr.
In 1810, another town fire destroyed the church. The current building was reconsecrated in 1823. The exterior of the church is in the Baroque style, while the interior has a neoclassical design.
The pulpit altar in the form of a Greek portico made of sandstone is striking. The interior is complemented by a baptismal font made of Zöblitz serpentine stone and windows with regional coats of arms.
The organ was originally built in 1851, has been rebuilt several times and was extensively reconstructed in 2004-2006. Today, it has 38 stops on three manuals and pedal.
