***Summer variant***
After a visit to the Kaiser Wilhelm monument on the eastern slope of the Wittekindsberg, we start our hike at the Weserbogen in Porta Westfalica at the junction with the European long-distance hiking trail E 11 (The Hague-Tallinn), Weserbergland-Weg and Wittekindsweg towards Veltheim to the Weser ferry (please note operating times, if necessary, bypass via Eisbergen + approx. 10 km). Bypass via Eisbergen + approx. 10 km, the winter variant of the Burgensteig is also listed in the Teutonavigator). We walk past Varenholz Castle (now a boarding school) in a southerly direction through the Nordlippische Bergland. The trail leads us east of Heidelbeck with a castle built in 1257 (now a place to stop for refreshments) over a ridge to the Steinberg, at 396 m the highest mountain in North Lippe. Sternberg Castle, a very special highlight on the Burgensteig, first mentioned around 1100, offers a view over the Lippe region as far as the Teutoburg Forest. In Barntrup, the hiking trail leads us directly through the courtyard of Barntrup Castle, which was built in the Weser Renaissance style. To the west of Eschenbruch, we enjoy a special view as far as the Ottenstein plateau. Up to the former Herlingsburg castle, then downhill again to the southern shore of SchiederSee lake, we reach the castle park and Schieder Castle, once the summer residence of Princess Pauline zur Lippe. Passing "Alt-Schieder" (archaeological monument), we climb steeply up to the Kahlenberg tower and walk over the Mörth, part of the Schwalenberger Wald nature reserve, to Schwalenberg. Along the town water, ascending along a narrow path, we see Schwalenberg Castle, we walk through the historic town center of the "painter's town" of Schwalenberg with the historic town hall, built in 1579.
Through the FFH area Salkenbruch, the idyllic villages of Kollerbeck and Oldenburg (residential tower of a hilltop castle) we reach Marienmüster Abbey, another highlight of the Burgensteig.
We hike to Vörden via the Hungerberg Tower. The Bismarck Tower in Höxter and the
ruin of Brunsburg Castle accompany us on the last section of the trail via the Philosophenweg
to the town hall in Höxter near the Weser.
