Directions
The Flamingo Route offers cyclists a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating nature of the German-Dutch border region. Covering around 450 kilometres, it connects numerous nature reserves and impressive landscapes that offer unforgettable experiences for both nature and cycling enthusiasts.
The ideal start to the Flamingo Route begins in the Zwillbrocker Venn, which is known for the world's northernmost flamingo breeding colony. Between March and July, cyclists can observe the graceful birds here amidst picturesque moor and heathland landscapes and shallow lakes. However, the area is also worth a visit outside of this period, as it is home to over 60 different bird species and numerous other animal and plant species.
The route continues across the Dutch border to the Haaksberger Venn. Here, an impressive moor and heathland landscape stretches over almost 600 hectares with botanical features such as the white beak reed, the lung gentian and the bog lily. This diversity makes the area a paradise for plant lovers and offers cyclists an impressive experience of nature.
The next highlight for cyclists is the Buurserzand nature reserve. Here you can discover over 150-year-old juniper stands which, in combination with small moors and forests, create a fairytale atmosphere. The varied landscape invites you to take a relaxing cycle tour and always offers new impressions.
Another interesting destination along the Flamingo Route is the Lünten fish pond. The originally dammed heath pond was used for fish farming until 1952. Today, visitors can marvel at the diverse fish population and enjoy the idyllic surroundings. The pond offers a welcome break on a cycle tour and allows you to observe nature in a peaceful atmosphere.
The Witte Veen, a nature reserve that connects Germany and the Netherlands, impresses with its well-preserved wet meadows, moorland and still waters. The opportunity to observe Heck cattle in their natural environment is particularly exciting for cyclists. The cross-border location of the area makes it a special experience on the Flamingo Route.
The route continues through the Kuhlenvenn, a true paradise for birdwatchers. At the centre of the fens is a 10-hectare groundwater lake, which serves as a habitat for numerous bird species. Cyclists can discover a wide variety of birdlife here and enjoy the tranquillity of the water landscape.
The cycle path continues through the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn to Bekendelle. Bekendelle is characterised by numerous small streams and an almost 200-year-old forest, which is home to special bird species such as the kingfisher and grey wagtail. The unspoilt nature and varied landscape make this section of the Flamingo Route particularly attractive.
The Korenburger Venn forms the end of the circular tour. This area of almost 500 hectares once threatened to become the largest wooded area in Winterswijk due to the spread of shrubs and trees. However, thanks to targeted rewetting measures, the area has been protected and is now a beautiful moorland with numerous orchid species. For cyclists, the Korenburg Fens are an impressive end to the Flamingo Route.
The Flamingo Route combines nature experiences and cycle tourism in a unique way. It leads through varied landscapes, offers insights into rare animal and plant worlds and combines cultural highlights of both countries. This route is an absolute must for cyclists who love nature and exercise.
