  • Start: Tecklenburg, market square
  • Destination: Bad Iburg, Castle
This stage leads along huge lime quarries from historic Tecklenburg to Iburg Castle on the largely natural ridge path. The route is free of steep ascents and descents and offers impressive views of the Münsterland parkland.

NOTES:
Due to the rock with a thin layer of humus , muddy conditions can occur on individual sections after long periods of rain, as the path dries only slowly. Unfortunately, this is a natural phenomenon and cannot be influenced. In these cases, please wear waterproof and non-slip footwear or avoid periods of heavy rain.

In Lienen, the digital track around the Malepartus forestry deviates from the route guidance/markings on site. There are currently temporary path relocations here.

The stage at a glance:
1.            Start and finish point of the stage
The stage starts in the picturesque old town of Tecklenburg and ends at the castle in the Kneipp spa town of Bad Iburg.

Tip: It is worth making a detour to the remains of the mighty castle complex in Tecklenburg. From there, you can enjoy a fascinating view over the entire town center.

2.            Length of the stage in kilometers / altitude difference / route character
The stage is 21 kilometers long and has an altitude difference of around 300 metres. The route is largely flat and natural.

3.             Special landscape features
Along the stage, fresh lime beech forests with a dense carpet of spring flowers alternate with sparse and barren forests on sandstone. The trail from Lengerich is characterized by numerous quarries where limestone is or was quarried for cement production. Some quarries are protected and are no longer in use. Nevertheless, they are worth a detour. The most impressive of these is the "Lengerich Canyon". This quarry has been renaturalized and is a nature reserve. From two viewing platforms near the trail, you can look down onto the turquoise water deep below in the old quarry. The route is lined with many viewpoints.

Break tip: Halfway through the stage, it is worth stopping for refreshments at the traditional "Malepartus" inn.

Highlights on the route

  • The historic old town of Tecklenburg is known for its winding alleyways, lovingly renovated half-timbered houses and offers numerous cultural attractions, such as the open-air theater in summer.

  • The Wasserschloss Haus Marck in Tecklenburg is an impressive building in whose grounds top-class castle concerts are held in summer.
  • The Schloss Iburg in Bad Iburg is a prince-bishop's residence and Benedictine abbey from the 11th century. The castle is the town's landmark and offers impressive views of the surrounding area.

  • The Bad Iburg Clock Museum offers an extensive collection of clocks and clock parts from different eras and countries.
  • The 600-metre-long Tree Top Walk in Bad Iburg offers over 30 adventure and learning stations as well as an impressive 30-metre-high viewing platform with a view of the Teutoburg Forest. You can experience nature from a new perspective and learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the region. Some of the trees are even up to 250 years old and provide a habitat for five different bat species, among other things.
Good to know: The treetop walk is barrier-free.

Directions

As part of the certification of the Hermannsweg as a quality hiking trail, the route was relocated on significant sections of this stage. Today it once again leads along the historic ridge path near Lengerich, which could not be used during the last century due to open-cast mining. Please follow the southern variant as described here from Tecklenburg market square with the signposting "H".

If you want/need to descend before the end of the stage, use the designated  Zugangsweg Lienen or one of the paths to the village of Lengerich beforehand.

On this stage you will find the following quality Hermannshöhen establishments:

- Bad Iburg: HOTEL IM PARK, Tel. 05403 788380, www.hotelimpark.de

- Bad Iburg: Stadtcafe Große-Rechtien - for a relaxing break

Please note the following tip for the return journey from Bad Iburg to Tecklenburg (as we cross a state border here, we unfortunately have two transport associations, the VOS and the RVM, which unfortunately do not offer a continuous line):

Take a cab from Bad Iburg to Lienen (NRW) or hike the route from Bad Iburg to Lienen on foot.

In Lienen, take the bus from the Rathaus bus stop (line R46) to *Lengerich Bahnhof (ATTENTION! CHANGE! 1 minute -  to line R45) and then continue to Tecklenburg.

This is the easiest and cheapest option to Tecklenburg, here the Fahrplanauskunft .

*In Lengerich you have to change to the bus to Tecklenburg. It could be that you are already on the right bus, you have to ask, sometimes the bus driver changes the destination of his journey in Lengerich so a bus change would not be necessary.
