Explore the historic old town of Schmallenberg, which is part of the Historical City and Town Cores in NRW, on a walk through history.

You should ideally start the tour at the Wood and Tourism Center (where the 'Historic City Tour' flyer is also available, parking, toilets) or at the parking lot at the Stadthalle.

The Historic City Tour takes you from the present and—literally—leads you on foot on a journey into the past: We start with the textile industry, which is still important for Schmallenberg today, and walk along Weststraße heading south, going further back in time until the founding of the city. The nucleus of the city lies in today's Kurpark Old Cemetery at the southernmost point of the narrow ridge surrounded by the Lenne River. If you'd like to take a break, benches and viewpoints invite you to linger here; as do numerous cafés and restaurants along the route.

Detailed information about Schmallenberg's city history, anecdotes about sculptures and personalities, and great historical photos can be found at: https://www.schmallenberger-sauerland.de/besonderes/historischer-stadtrundgang-schmallenberg-ueberblick/

Directions

From the starting point, the History Column in front of the Stadthalle, the path leads up to the Schützenplatz. From there, follow Weststraße heading south. With a small detour to or into the church, continue past Südstraße to the Town Hall. The Wer, running to the right beside the Town Hall, leads to the Old Cemetery and the Chapel on the Werth, offering a beautiful view of the Kurpark and, in the distance, the Grafschaft Monastery. Following the street 'Auf der Mauer', you reach the Wasserpforte. Here, turn left and climb up to Oststraße, which you follow northward. As part of the Historical City Tour, turn briefly into Wimereuxstraße and Synagogenstraße, then continue on Oststraße. The Jewish Cemetery lies to your right—follow the signage here. Alternatively, you can also walk directly from the Schützenplatz back to the Stadthalle.
