Historischer Stadtrundgang Rheda

The varied circular tour starts at Doktorplatz. The name of this square was coined by locals in the 19th century, as citizens (and their animals) would sometimes use the square to wait when visiting the local vet. Originally, however, this square was called "The square where the lime tree stands".

Now look further towards the "Nudelhaus", as the first apothecary's house in Rheda, built in 1604, was hidden behind today's restaurant. The Neuhaus restaurant, built in 1716, is very atypical for Calvinist-influenced Rheda with its striking façade decoration - perhaps a Catholic once lived here? Take some time to study the colorful coats of arms.

Now it's time to explore the alleyways of the historic old town. In "Großer Wall" and "Kleine Straße", you will stroll past beautiful half-timbered houses that line the streets to the right and left. There are information boards on the pretty buildings that tell you interesting facts about the houses.

Don't forget to take a look at the ground. The symbols of the old craft guilds are depicted on the pavement and reveal who once lived and worked here.

From the small alleyways of the old town, you will now reach the newly created pedestrian zone.

On Rathausplatz is the Protestant town church, one of the oldest churches in the region. Various church treasures, including a baptismal font from 1567 and the prince's gallery from the beginning of the 18th century, which is still in use today, give the church an unmistakable appearance. The tour continues along Hoppenstraße with its interesting half-timbered buildings towards the cathedral courtyard. The half-timbered house, built in 1616, is now used as a meeting place. One room is even available for civil weddings. 

Following Schlossstraße, you will now reach Wilhelmstraße with the Catholic parish church of St. Clemens. It has made a name for itself above all with the famous Fischer & Krämer organ. The organ concerts with world-famous musicians are real visitor magnets.

A few steps from St. Clemens Church, the path leads you to Flora-Westfalica Park. The rose garden was created especially for the 1988 State Garden Show. Through the park you reach the palace garden. The mighty moated castle rises up in front of you. First mentioned in a document in 1170, it combines several architectural styles: a chapel tower from the 13th century, a Renaissance wing with a gallery and a Baroque wing. But it is also the little anecdotes that captivate visitors: The graffiti of a prisoner in the  small castle chapel or the horse skeleton in the carriage museum.

The path finally leads you back to the starting point, Doktorplatz, via Steinweg.
