The "Luther Trail Saxony" runs along the river "Pleiße" via the former royal seat of Altenburg to Borna on roads with little traffic and meadow paths. It is not only the large towns that are worth seeing. In the small villages along the way, you will also come across churches worth seeing and historically valuable houses.

This tour starts in Altenburg and leads past the Windischleuba dam. The Thuringian Luther Trail meets its Saxon counterpart at the Pahna lakeside campsite. It approaches the village of Whyra through dense forests. The trail continues via Zedtlitz, along the Whyra floodplain to the town center of Borna.

Altenburg has a special significance for the Reformation, as it was not only one of the most important residences of the Saxon electors. It is also associated with the name Georg Spalatin, who was the closest confidant, secretary and confessor of Elector Frederick the Wise. As a confidant of Luther, Spalatin was an important mediator between Luther and the Elector for many years.

Directions

From the large pond in Altenburg, the route leads via Teichvorstadt, Berggasse and Jungferngasse to a traffic circle, where the Luther Trail turns off into the castle park, crosses it and then continues along the Hausweg. Follow the Hausweg to Beethovenstraße, from where you turn into Poschwitzer Straße. Cross the tracks at Weißer Berg and follow the marked path westwards through Poschwitz and Remsa. The route follows meadow paths parallel to Chauseestraße to Windischleuba. After Windischleuba, you cross the river Pleiße on Rochlitzer Straße and then head north, past the dam, through the village of Pänitz. You then follow the marked path through a wooded area. The Einsiedelweg leads through another section of forest to Thränaer Straße. Cross this road and follow the marked path past Wyhra in a northerly direction through Plateka to Zedtlitz, which is already part of the town of Borna. From Zedlitz, the trail leads through the Wyhra floodplain past two small lakes through an allotment site towards the town center. Via Hausgase you reach Dinterplatz, Kirchgasse and Abtdorfer Straße, where this stage ends.
