The "Luther Trail Saxony" runs along the river "Pleiße" from Altenburg to Gnandstein on roads with little traffic and meadow paths. Not only the large towns are worth seeing. In the small villages along the way you will also come across churches worth seeing and historically valuable houses. Before Gnandstein, the trail leads hikers through an extensive wooded area and ends at one of the best-preserved Romanesque castles in Saxony - Gnandstein Castle.

They separate again in Altenburg. The "Luther Trail Thuringia" then heads west, while the "Luther Trail Saxony" heads east into the Leinawald forest. Along forest and field paths, the trail winds along an idyllic route through woodland and meadows. Gnandstein Castle, which was once the headquarters of the von Einsiedel family, can be seen from afar. They owned large estates in the region and campaigned for the introduction of the Reformation. Despite the threats and influence of Duke Georg, which prevented the introduction of the Reformation before 1539, the von Einsiedel family was one of the first Saxon noble families to openly embrace the Reformation.

Did you know that the western section of the Luther Trail between Leipzig and Zwickau runs along one of the most famous old long-distance trade routes? The Via Imperii stretches from Stettin via Borna and Altenburg to Rome. The Via Imperii is signposted with the famous scallop shell.
