The area of the Saxon Hills is known for its beautiful meadows and idyllic woodlands. The trail begins at Gnandstein Castle, one of the best-preserved Romanesque castles in Saxony, and leads through the famous pottery town of Kohren-Sahlis along the meadows of the Wyhra to the large district town of Borna.

As early as 1519, Borna was the first town in Ernestine Saxony to have Protestant preaching. It was here in Borna that Martin Luther wrote the famous Ash Wednesday letter on March 5, 1522 and preached four times in the town church of St. Mary's in 1522. There is a special Luther memorial in front of the town church. It was created by Burgdorf artist Hilko Schomerus and inaugurated in 2011. Today, Martin Luther Square is home to the Emmaus Church in Heuersdorf, which was relocated from Heuersdorf to Borna in October 2007.

Directions

This stage of the Luther Trail starts in Gnandstein below the castle and then runs south to Wüstenhain via Rudigsburg to the pottery town of Kohren-Sahlis. The trail then runs north again through a wooded area, along the Wyhra to the village of Streitwald, via Abthäuser to Frohburg. In Frohburg, follow the Wyhra to the castle pond and then walk along Brauhausgasse via the church square to August-Bebel-Straße. The route continues along Wiesenmühlweg and the Moto-Cross path, which leads north out of the town of Frohburg. Once again along the Wyhra, the route crosses Benndorf, Wyhra, Plateka and Zedtlitz. These are the first districts of the town of Borna. The path leads through an allotment garden site into Hausgasse, which leads into the town center. At Dinterplatz, the path turns into Reichsstraße and runs via Markt and Kirchstraße to Martin-Luther-Platz. From there, the route continues along Brühl to Pegauer Tor, then along Sachsenallee and into Abtsdorfer Straße. This stage of the Luther Trail ends at Victoriaschacht.
