This hiking route through the Saxon Burgenland is extremely romantic. The trail leads through forests, along streams and along beautiful forest and meadow paths. Nestled in the valley of castles lies Rochlitz, whose castle and castle church tower majestically over the town.

After Mittweida, the landscape becomes a little hillier. Along small country lanes and village roads, there are one or two churches to visit in small villages before you can see the towers of Rochlitz Castle and Rochlitz town church from afar. This place is of particular significance for the Reformation due to the work of Duchess Elisabeth of Saxony, who introduced the Reformation to her territory from 1537. Johann Mathesius, a student of Luther and his first biographer, also had his roots in this town.

Directions

In Mittweida, you start at Kirchberg, walk along Frongasse and leave the town through Schwanenpark towards the industrial estate. The trail leads out of the town in a westerly direction via Leipziger Straße. Village roads and country lanes take hikers through Frankenau and Topfseifertsdorf, past Niederthalheim via Winkelner Mühle to Kolkau. The path here always runs alongside the Erlbach stream. After the village of Seelitz, the trail crosses the B107 and then continues north, parallel to the B107, to Rochlitz. Before Rochlitz, you cross the river "Zwickauer Mulde" and reach the town center via Dresdner Straße and Clemens Pfau Platz. There, the route leads along Bahnhofstraße and Bismarckstraße past the Johann Mathesius Grammar School and ends at the market square.
