The new Roman-Lippe route replaces the previous Roman route. It leads from the Hermann monument in Detmold to the sources of the Lippe near Paderborn, always along the Lippe, via Haltern am See to Xanten. Experience "history in the river" and cycle where the Romans once walked.

The Roman Lippe Route begins at the Hermann Monument in Detmold, follows the Lippe from its source to its mouth in the Rhine and connects exciting Roman sites with soothing green floodplain landscapes and historically charming town centers for around 295 km to its destination in Xanten.

The Lippe, the longest river in North Rhine-Westphalia, has an eventful past and invites you on a historic journey of discovery. It has had a lasting impact on the areas and inhabitants along its banks throughout the ages and even the Romans recognized its importance.
On its gentle course, the Lippe connects five regions in one of Germany's most diverse federal states: the Teutoburg Forest, the Sauerland, the Münsterland, the Ruhr metropolis and the Lower Rhine.

The Lippe, a river well worth discovering, has a river-accompanying long-distance cycle route of the highest quality with the Römer-Lippe-Route! This route is the new destination for cyclists, nature lovers and all visitors who are enthusiastic about Roman culture, the water experience and European history.

Ride the 295 km long main route in 4-6 day stages and discover why the Romans did not move along the Lippe by chance.
