The Saxon Wine Hiking Trail connects the gems of the Dresden surroundings along the Elbe and leads to the most beautiful vineyards, viewpoints, and wine cellars. Baroque and modern Dresden, the picturesque Pirna, the villa and garden town of Radebeul, and the porcelain city of Meißen are just some of the historically significant stages of the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail. Marked testimonies of the over 850-year-old viticulture in the Elbe valley can be found here as well as modern wineries and cozy wine taverns. Here you can taste the rare drops from more than 60 grape varieties – including Riesling, white, gray, and Pinot Noir, as well as Traminer, Scheurebe, and the Goldriesling that grows only here on the Elbe.

There is a specially created website for the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail with all information about the individual stages, maps, interesting sights, places to eat and much more:

https://weinwandern-sachsen.de/

Attention! Please check the opening hours of the various places to eat along the way here before you start your hike, so you don’t end up in front of closed doors. For example, "Besenwirtschaften" (seasonal wine taverns) are usually only open on weekends or in spring and autumn.

Hiking from Pirna to Dresden, hikers and wine lovers pass stunning villas and magnificent castles. A detour into the Dresden Old Town leads to the Zwinger, Semperoper, and Frauenkirche. In Radebeul, hikers should take time for the Saxon Viticulture Museum Hoflößnitz and the first experiential winery in Europe at Wackerbarth Castle. Then it continues to Meißen: from afar, the impressive castle hill with the cathedral and Albrechtsburg can be seen. The Wine Experience World of the Saxon Wine Cooperative Meißen offers extraordinary insights into the history and present of viticulture. At the end of the hiking trail, winemakers and hosts of numerous historic wine taverns in Diesbar-Seußlitz invite you.

The Saxon Wine Hiking Trail is divided into 6 daily stages with an average of 15 to 18 km or 5 to 6 hours of walking per day.

The route is not barrier-free

1st stage: from Pirna to Dresden-Pillnitz

Where once the first large-scale vineyards appeared on the Elbe, the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail begins: in Pirna. Today, there are only small vineyards here, but numerous testimonies of historical viticulture. Cultural highlights on the 1st stage of the wine hiking trail are the Richard Wagner sites in Graupa as well as Pillnitz Castle and the vineyard church in the middle of the Pillnitz Royal Vineyard.

2nd stage: from Dresden-Pillnitz to Dresden-Wilder Mann

This stage runs mostly on paved, hardly trafficked streets and passes all the vineyards in the Dresden city area as well as magnificent villas and small treasures related to viticulture. Stunning views of the Elbe valley, the Carl Maria von Weber Museum, the Wachwitz rhododendron garden, and the Dresden Elbe palaces make this "urban" section worthwhile.

3rd stage: from Dresden-Wilder Mann to Radebeul-Zitzschewig

Still on Dresden terrain at first, then in Radebeul begins one of the most beautiful sections of the wine hiking trail: lovingly renovated vintner houses, small castles, the longest staircase system in Saxony in the middle of the vineyards, and the historic Hoflößnitz winery complex are true gems along the path. Finally, Wackerbarth Castle, the first experiential winery in Europe, invites you to events and daily tours.

4th stage: from Radebeul-Zitzschewig to Oberau

On this stage, you pass only a few vineyards in Coswig and Weinböhla, but enjoy great viewpoints – partly from historic towers – overlooking the heights of Weinböhla. Architectural highlights include the Gellerthaus, Oberau Castle, and Germany's oldest railway station in Niederau.

5th stage: from Oberau to Meißen

After crossing the village Niederau with its small tower windmill and the Nassau protected landscape area, you reach the Spaar mountains, a range between the wine village Sörnewitz and Meißen. The hiking trail passes vineyards, wineries, and historical testimonies of viticulture, as well as unique viewpoints over the Elbe. Finally, you reach the wine and porcelain city Meißen with the Wine Experience World of the Meißen Wine Cooperative.

6th stage: from Meißen to Diesbar-Seußlitz

If you want to visit the historic old town, the Albrechtsburg and the cathedral, or the world-famous porcelain manufactory, you need to cross to the opposite side of the Elbe, as the wine hiking trail extends on the right side of the Elbe. The last stage runs mostly above the vineyards. Proschwitz Castle, renovated pretty village churches, and numerous wine taverns line the path, which also offers a Bronze Age fortification and further panoramic views of the Elbe landscape. The picturesque Elbe wine village Diesbar-Seußlitz marks the end of the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail.
