Cathedral of Meissen

Picturesquely, the towers of the cathedral tower over the city of Meissen from the castle hill. The cathedral is a three-nave Gothic hall church with a transept and is one of the largest churches in Saxony. More than 150 years were built on the stately building. Construction began in 1250, but even after the final consecration of the cathedral in 1401, alterations and extensions were carried out again and again, so that different architectural styles can be recognized in the cathedral.

Inside the building, visitors can marvel at the valuable church furnishings. Worth seeing are, among other things, the high Gothic architecture that can be seen in the hall, as well as the larger-than-life stone founder and patron saint figures or the St. John's Bell, one of the most figured bells in the world.
