The sheepfold loop
Total length: 21 km
Route: Amelinghausen - Rehlingen - Tellmer - Betzendorf - Amelinghausen
Highlights: historic sheepfold Betzendorf, historic sheepfold Amelinghausen, Betzendorfer Berg, fieldstone church Betzendorf, Lopausee
The route starts at the tourist information office in Amelinghausen, where you will receive all the information and tips about the upcoming cycle tour. Leave Amelinghausen via the Hessenweg and keep straight on towards Rehlingen. As you cycle through the village, cross the small Lopau stream and continue straight ahead through the forest to the small settlement of Diersbüttel. After two kilometers on the district road, take the field path "Alter Mühlenweg" to Tellmer.
On the cycle path to Betzendorf, you will see the historic sheepfold on the right, which can now be used as an event location. The St. Peter and Paul Church, one of the oldest places of worship in Lüneburg Heath, with its massive round tower dating back to 1190, is particularly worth seeing on the tour through Betzendorf, which is over 1000 years old. The area to the west of Betzendorf is the highest in the district of Lüneburg. From Betzendorfer Berg, you have an excellent view of the surrounding area, the large forest areas of the Süsing and, in good weather, as far as the Lüneburg church towers and the banks of the Elbe on the horizon.
Passing hidden blueberry plantations, you reach the historic Amelinghausen sheepfold at the edge of the forest. The building, which is over 200 years old, and the entire area with its campfire site have offered a special ambience for celebrations and events of all kinds for many decades.
The Lopausee lake then lies before you, dammed up from the small stream near Rehlingen. Through the underpass, you have the opportunity to visit the Heidschnucken stable in the Kronsbergheide, which is still used by the shepherd and his flock in the cold winter months and during the lambing season in spring. After passing the Lopaupark, the sheepfold tour is complete with the entrance to Amelinghausen.
