This cycle tour takes you to the steel sites in the western Ruhr region between Oberhausen and Duisburg.
For a long time, the area was known for its steel industry. Even today
the blast furnaces and steelworks of thyssenkrupp and HKM in Duisburg are Europe's
most important steel location. But this tour also takes in the legacy of the steel industry, important monuments such as the Oberhausen Gasometer or the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park.
The starting point
The Oberhausen Gasometer serves as the starting point for this RevierRoute, which is around 47 kilometres long. There are plenty of parking spaces on the CentrO grounds. By public transport, you can travel by bus or tram to the Neue Mitte. Alternatively, Oberhausen main station with direct long-distance transport connections is also not far away.
Start of the tour
Not much is left of the huge Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen. The CentrO Oberhausen has emerged as a shopping and leisure area from the wasteland of the former steel site. The enormous gasometer is the most striking building reminiscent of the old steelworks. From the roof, visitors have a beautiful view of the western Ruhr region. Inside, temporary exhibitions attract visitors every year.

On Green Paths to the Former Blast Furnace Plant
From the Oberhausen Gasometer, the tour first takes you across the Rhine-Herne Canal to the northern bank. The architecturally special bridge Slinky Springs to Fame and the nearby Oberhausen Palace with LUDWIGGALERIE and Kaisergarten are already worthwhile stops. Past the Rot-Weiß Oberhausen football stadium, the tour leads to the Emscher and the Green Path. This old railway line used to be part of the Emschertalbahn and was an important transport route for coal, ores and other goods between the industrial plants in the Ruhr region and the important transport ports on the Rhine. The Green Trail leads directly to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park.
When industrial culture shines in a new light
The former blast furnace plant was shut down in 1985 and turned into an extraordinary attraction in the 1990s as part of the International Building Exhibition IBA Emscherpark. The highlight is the completely accessible blast furnace 5. In the meantime, many other uses have settled in the disused blast furnace plant, from the diving gasometer to a climbing garden and a high ropes course. In the evening hours, the site is illuminated by a light installation by the artist Jonathan Park.
The world's largest inland port
From Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park, the route leads along smaller city streets to the world's largest inland port. In the past, huge quantities of coal, iron ore and steel were handled here, but today container shipping is particularly important for the port. In Ruhrort, the German Inland Navigation Museum in particular offers interesting insights into the history of shipping.
Along the Rhine
The Rhine was one of the central transport routes for industry in the Ruhr region. Barges transported coal and ores between the North Sea and the Ruhr area. At junction 36 you can take a detour to the left side of the Rhine to the Rheinpreußen slag heap and the Geleucht. At Alsumer Berg, it is worth climbing the small slag heap with an exciting view of the coking plant and the steelworks on the Rhine.
The HOAG route
The cycle tour leads back to Oberhausen via the HOAG route. This railway line was also a central goods connection between the port in Walsum and the coal mines and steelworks in the western Ruhr region. Cyclists pass the disused Sterkrade colliery, of which only the pithead frame and shaft hall remain. The last few metres lead back to the starting point at the Oberhausen gasometer.
