Attention!

The Gohrischheide is currently not passable due to the large-scale forest fire and the firefighting operations. Therefore, the cycling routes Gohrischheiderundweg, Röderradroute, Kirchenradweg, and Lustlagerrundweg are not usable in the Gohrischheide area! We will inform you when the danger has passed.

The Röderradroute follows the course of the Große Röder along idyllic, natural paths from the source in the West Lusatia to near its mouth in southern Brandenburg.

This cycling route covers 106 km through Saxon natural landscapes, idyllic forests and floodplains, connecting not only numerous towns in the region but also enabling the discovery of their rich culture with historic castles and museums.  The start is at the source of the Große Röder in West Lusatia near Rammenau. From here, the route goes via Bretnig-Hauswalde to Großröhrsdorf, where a stop at the local history museum or the Technical Museum of Tape Weaving is recommended.

Along the Heinrichsthaler ponds, you cycle to Radeberg, the town famous worldwide for its brewery. Right by the Röder is an opportunity to visit the city swimming pool after passing Klippenstein Castle. The river course winds along the cycle path out of the town. In Seifersdorf, you cross the idyllic Seifersdorfer Valley and at Hermsdorf Castle, the Röder embraces the historic buildings and castle pond.

The Röderradroute continues through more villages to Radeburg. Here the river forms a large reservoir on the right side at the entrance to the town. In Radeburg, you can visit the local history museum with the Heinrich Zille exhibition or take a detour with the Lößnitzgrundbahn to Moritzburg or Radebeul. Later on, the route passes through the town of Großenhain. Worth seeing here is the charming old town with the Kulturschloss, whose historic keep offers a wonderful view over the town and the Großenhainer Pflege in summer. The Marienkirche, the “Old Latin School,” and the Garden Show Park, a modern open space created for the state garden show, are also worth a visit. The route then follows the Röder toward Zabeltitz. Here you pass the Großen Gabelwehr where the Röder divides. Afterwards, you reach Zabeltitz with the Baroque garden with old castle and palace. Also worth seeing in Zabeltitz are the farmers' museum and the St.-Georgen Church. At the Parkschänke at the northern end of the Baroque garden, a break in the beer garden is recommended.

The idyllic Röderaue landscape protection area with a total of 25 ponds and the wonderful floodplain landscape is one of the natural highlights of this route. In Tiefenau, the castle church and the adjoining rose garden with its pavilions are very worth seeing. In the café, one can enjoy a relaxing break here on Sundays during the summer months.

The route finally ends in Brandenburg, in the small town of Kosilenzien, where a stop at the Burgwall Café on weekends is a must.

Directions

The route starts at the source of the Röder, somewhat hidden in the forest near Röderbrunn. The route is well signposted, following the signs with the white “R” on green background. Leaving the forest, the route passes the "Margareten Oak" and then turns right. It first goes via Luisenberg to Bretnig-Hauswalde, then off the main road via Kirchstraße to Großröhrsdorf. The town is bypassed south on Weststraße and its extension via Alte Straße. At the town exit, turn left via Hahnweg to Kleinröhrsdorf. On Großröhrsdorfer Straße, via Randhäuser and Heinrichsthal, you finally reach Radeberg.

The route crosses S 177 and then immediately turns left into “Am Hofegrund.” This leads via Schlossberg to Klippenstein Castle. Then turn right via Wasserweg past the city pool, follow Röderstraße and Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Straße straight ahead and cross Dresdner Straße. Then always follow the street “An den Leithen” and Talstraße along the Röder. In Lotzdorf turn left onto Lotzdorfer Straße and then continue straight on Rödertalstraße through Liegau-Augustusbad. A steep climb leads out of the town, then keep left towards Seifersdorf. At the castle, turn left again to enter Seifersdorfer Tal. Just before Marienmühle, go uphill again to Schönborn and at the next intersection keep left to reach Grünberg. Ride along Lausaer Straße and then turn right onto Schlossstraße to pass Hermsdorf Castle. Cross Dresdner Straße straight and follow Medinger Straße.

Pass through the towns of Medingen, Großdittmannsdorf, and Boden before arriving in Radeburg. Through the town center via the roundabout, Radeberger Straße, Würschnitzer Straße, Hofwall and cross Röderstraße. Then turn right onto Königsbrücker Straße and after a few meters turn left again onto Röderaue. Continue straight to Rödern. Here keep right to leave the town. Continue straight to the signpost for Freitelsdorf, turn left and follow the river course again. Through the towns of Cunnersdorf, Bieberach, and Kalkreuth, Paulsmühle, and Reiherhof to Großenhain. The route runs along the Röder, past the nature experience pool and lake area, and through Parkstraße in the west of the town into the city park. Continue on Skassaer Straße to Skassa. In town, follow Rödertalstraße and then turn right onto Riesaer Landstraße, then right again onto “Zur Neumühle.” Follow on via Wildenhain and Bauda to Gabelwehr and then to Zabeltitz. Pass the Baroque garden and palace on the right and cycle about 200 meters to the right into the forest after the Parkschänke on the main street.

Follow the Röder meadows and signs along the ponds to Koselitz. Turn right there and continue straight past the church. Then turn left and pass Toffelsteich. Follow the main road to Tiefenau and keep right before the castle church. Circle the Tiefenauer Brauteich on the right, continue straight through the pond area to Spansberg and follow Dorfstraße there. Continue straight, leaving the town towards Schweinfurth and after the field path cycle left around the Schweinfurter ponds. In Kröbeln cross Teichstraße, then turn right onto Liebenwerdaer Straße and cross Mühlberger Straße on the left. Then keep right and continue on the field paths, past Burgwall, to reach the destination Kosilenzien.
