Between Meißen and Rothschönberg, one of the most beautiful valley landscapes of Saxony is revealed. The Triebisch valleys are a natural gem where clear streams meander through narrow incision valleys and centuries-old mills tell stories of past times. The signposted route hiking trail connects the district of Buschbad on the outskirts of Meißen with the historic manor Rothschönberg and is one of the selected "favorites of hiking in Dresden Elbland".

Hike from Buschbad to Rothschönberg – A nature experience full of history and wide views

The path leads through impressive landscapes with wide views over fields, forests, and winding streams. The route starts in the Meißen district of Buschbad, a former cold water sanatorium, directly on the Triebisch river. After a short but steep climb, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view towards the porphyry quarry and the town of Meißen.

Natural beauty Triebisch

An absolute highlight is the river Triebisch, which accompanies the hike over long stretches. It winds picturesquely through dense forests, babbles through meadows, and was once the lifeline for over 50 historic water mills. Some of these mills, such as Helm- and Niedermühle, lie directly on the route and invite discovery. The Preiskermühle, with its idyllic resting place by the mill pond, is a perfect spot for a break in the shade of old trees.

Historical treasures

A small detour from the route to the village of Taubenheim is definitely worth it. Here you can explore the former manor with castle as well as the charming village church. You can also take a break at the farm shop and café of the "Pfarrgut Taubenheim" to enjoy coffee and cake or purchase regional products.

The path then leads uphill to the highest point of the tour, the Baeyerhöhe (320 meters). From here, enjoy a breathtaking view extending up to 65 kilometers on clear days. A survey pillar and a cozy resting place invite you to linger.

Cultural discoveries

In Burkhardswalde, you will find Saxony's smallest castle, the Steingut, whose history still holds many mysteries. The nearby historic inn "Alma Kasper" and the pretty church also invite a visit. The last section of the hike surprises with extraordinary perspectives: the impressive A4 bridges are crossed twice underneath, and at the "Tanneberger Loch" the path leads directly over the former motorway track – today a beautiful piece of nature.

End of the tour: Rothschönberg

Shortly before the goal, you can make a small detour to the main adit of the Rothschönberg tunnel, an impressive testimony of mining history and part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Ore Mountains Mining Region / Krušnohoří". The hike ends at the car park on the castle hill in Rothschönberg. The castle houses a small but fine exhibition on regional history and mining, and the pavilion in the park offers, among other things, a hidden view.

This route offers a perfect mix of nature experience, history, and culture – ideal for everyone who wants to fully enjoy the beauty of Dresden Elbland!

Directions

The hike begins at the Buschbad bus stop, where there are also parking facilities. The Triebisch river flows a few meters from the start. The nearby Götterfelsen with its glowing summit cross can be reached via the hiking favorite Dresden Elbland "Götterfelsenweg".

After a small allotment garden area, the path follows a trail that climbs steeply through the forest to the Polenzer Höhe. Once at the top, a beautiful view of the landscape rewards you. Then Obersemmelsberg is crossed, and the route continues via a meadow path and a side road to the Preiskermühle, which is located directly on the path.

The hiking trail now runs along an old railway embankment of the former narrow-gauge railway, which is used as a cycle path. Here you pass Hotel Helmmühle and the former Polenz train station with a rest area. The route then continues past the Niedermühle and a scenic section along the Kleine Triebisch to the village of Taubenheim.

Behind Taubenheim, a beautiful path follows the meandering stream through meadows and forests. The next landmark is the climb to the Baeyerhöhe, which is moderate and manageable.

After the ascent comes Burkhardswalde. Wide, paved paths accompanied by wind turbines lead into the village. At the village exit, the path follows a side road further to Schmiedewalde. From here, the Schmiedewalde stream and the Triebisch are followed through varied nature. Two imposing bridges of the A4 motorway are crossed underneath.

At the Damm-Mühle bus stop, the path briefly turns onto the street before returning to a meadow and later forest path. This leads towards Rothschönberg. Here, a small detour to the main adit of the Rothschönberg tunnel is worthwhile.

The last 750 meters lead up a steep side road to Rothschönberg Castle, the hike's destination. The nearby Rothschönberg Kottewitz junction bus stop is about 900 meters from the castle and offers a good option for the return trip. The bus stop is reached downhill via Bleiberg street.
